Machrihanish Dunes
Machrihanish Dunes
Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
My family had a summer home here when I was a boy, and my earliest childhood memories are of running on the broad sandy beach and hiding in the steep dunes at Machrihanish.
As I grew, I often caddied for my father and grandfather across "Old Tom’s" original masterpiece, which dates back to 1876, and whiled away hours fishing the salmon river that runs through the classic course.
I am thrilled to have embarked on a personal dream to create a second course in the dunes at Machrihanish, a dream I have mused over my entire career. The genesis of golf came from such landscapes, so we will be taking a "less is more" approach in and among these precious and fragile dunes.
To historians of the game Machrihanish Dunes may give us an insight into how golf looked and felt to my Scottish forebears centuries ago. Our intention is to create a course as Old Tom might have done in centuries past.
