Tetherow

Bend, Oregon, USA
Opening July 2008

Our course will be a key amenity of the new Tetherow resort, the first 4-star resort and spa in this central Oregon hotspot. The development takes its name from the historic pioneer Solomon Tetherow, who led a wagon train party through this area in the mid-1800s.

The backdrop is perfect for golf, as the course wends through a peaceful forest clearing rich with wildlife and character. Much of the vast native vegetation was either replanted or left untouched as we found it. Tetherow is working closely with the Audubon Society to gain full status as an "Audubon Certified" golf course, one of fewer than seventy worldwide.

The course conforms to the non-conformities in nature that I love so dearly. Tetherow reminds me of a heathland course, not unlike Queenwood, while at the same time delivering the kind of authentic experience one finds in Scotland; the paths are not concrete, but rather crushed rock, and the style of play allows golfers to bump-and-run and play the game on the ground instead of strictly in the air.

The high desert location was receptive to many of the same grasses that we used at Bandon Dunes. I will always have a soft spot for the Oregon coast, however I so fell in love with central Oregon and Bend that I moved our U.S. operation here!
